Horry County, SC – Habitat for Humanity of Horry County (HFHHC) has been awarded a grant to be used for the Habitat Home Buyer Program from BB&T Charitable Fund.  The grant will be used to support the Habitat Home Buyer Program, a program focused on educating Home Buyers to be successful Homeowners.

The Habitat Home Buyer Program is the cornerstone of the Habitat program that gives families the necessary tools to become successful Homeowners. The Habitat Home Buyer Program includes monthly meetings that feature a variety of speakers including six months of “Money Smart” classes taught by a HUD Certified Credit counselor.  Topics include the various types of financial institutions and the services they provide, benefits of a checking account, fundamentals of budgeting, an overview of credit and types of loans, how to build and repair credit, characteristics of a credit card, installment loan basics and “need to know” facts about automobile purchasing.

Other speakers and topics include information on Affordable Care Act, preparing your taxes, grocery shopping on a low income, parenting and discipline, effective communication and the importance of self-esteem and how to raise it.  The Home Buyer Program also incorporates a Children’s Education Program to provide age appropriate activities that expose our children to budgeting and money management all while building self-esteem and leadership skills.

Carla Schuessler, Executive Director for HFHHC “We are so grateful for the support of BB&T Charitable Fund and that they too recognize the significant role that financial education plays in being a homeowner. Families partner with us to acquire the access, skills and financial education necessary for them to improve their living conditions and repay an affordable mortgage.  In doing so, they seize the opportunity and possibilities that decent, affordable housing represent.”

The Habitat Home Buyer Program currently includes 20 families comprised for 20 adults and 34 children.  HFHHC will be breaking ground on its #143 home in Horry County on February 18 in Longs, SC.
