In the Navy, the Seabees have a legendary motto: “Can Do.” It’s a spirit of ingenuity, hard work, and never leaving a job unfinished.
Recently, that “Can Do” spirit was on full display in Horry County, but it wasn’t on a military base. It was in the driveway of a Navy veteran and retired police officer who served our community for 30 years.
The Advocate in the Family
The project began when Gregory’s son-in-law, Eric, noticed a need. As a Navy Seabee himself and a founder of the Navy Seabee Veterans of America in South Carolina, Eric knows that veterans are often the last people to ask for help.
“I feel if we weren’t here to advocate for him, he wouldn’t have anybody that could do that for him,” Eric said while watching the new shingles go up. “And there’s a lot of veterans in this community that are in the same circumstances.”
The Partnership: Building a Shelter for a Protector
Gregory spent three decades as a police officer, protecting our neighborhoods. This month, Habitat for Humanity of Horry County—alongside some incredible partners—got the chance to protect him.
Through the Roof Deployment Project, we teamed up with Leverage Roofing and Owens Corning to provide Gregory with a roof that will last for decades to come. It’s more than just shingles and nails; it’s the peace of mind that comes with knowing home is a safe harbor.
Why Your Advocacy Matters
Eric’s message to the community is simple: Stay engaged.
While we are celebrating Gregory’s new roof today, our list of veterans waiting for critical repairs continues to grow. These are men and women who served in the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard—many of whom are living in homes with failing HVAC systems, leaking roofs, or no wheelchair access.
