We’ve Broken Ground on our Second ReStore Location

Habitat for Humanity of Horry County ReStore’s Second Location Will be Located in North Myrtle Beach Area

Habitat for Humanity of Horry County recently broke ground on the construction of its second ReStore location next week.

On Friday, February 24^th, Habitat for Humanity of Horry County ReStore staff, board members and North Myrtle Beach area community leaders gathered to officially kick-off construction of the long-awaited resale store. The groundbreaking will take place at 2191 E. Highway 9 in Longs.

Since 2000, the Habitat for Humanity of Horry County ReStore has served the Myrtle Beach and Socastee areas of Horry County through their first location. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, the first store location has kept 1,100 tons of materials out of local landfills and has helped to fund the construction of 3 homes in the last year.

According to Habitat for Humanity (habitat.org), when the first ReStore opened in 1991, “their vision was clear: keep new and used home and building materials out of the waste stream while helping fund Habitat’s home-, hope- and community-building work. Customers came from all over to find deals on windows, doors, paint, hardware, tools, furniture, appliances and decor to spruce up their own homes while helping others build and secure theirs….As of 2021, there were more than 1,000 ReStore locations across six countries, all contributing to Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Since most of the merchandise for sale in these stores is donated by local residents and businesses, no two ReStores are exactly alike — and neither are their beginnings.”

“The Habitat ReStore model is much more than a thrift store, it is a vital financial component to support our mission to build safe, decent, and affordable homes for families in need in our community,” states Jason Greene, Executive Director.  “The importance of this expansion cannot be underscored enough for it will allow Habitat for Humanity of Horry County to expand new home construction, maintenance and repair activities, financial literacy programs, and community impact projects…which will allow us to serve more families in Horry County.”

The organization plans to construct a 20,000 square foot ReStore facility just off Highway 9 in Longs, on the corner of Charter Drive and Highway 9. It is expected that construction will take approximately 10 months, with the new store opening to patrons in January of 2024. Opening a second ReStore will allow the organization to serve more of the county while also raising even more funds to support the mission of building homes in partnership with families, right here in the Horry County community

“With this expansion of a second ReStore, Habitat for Humanity of Horry County will now be capable of serving a larger part of our community base of Horry County,” according to Joey Gregory, ReStore Director. “This expansion will allow us to provide greater resources to our community to strengthen our mission of building safe, decent, affordable housing and continuing to support our other programs.”
