Habitat for Humanity of Horry County is pleased to announce the expansion of the organization’s Critical Home Repair services to all of Horry County. Through the Program, we offer home repair services to homeowners so they can continue to live in safe, decent homes for years to come. The Critical Home Repair Program focuses primarily on repair and/or rehab projects that will improve the quality of life for the Horry County residents and provide a safe, decent home.

In an effort to serve more families, Habitat for Humanity of Horry County launched a Maintenance and Repair branch of programming in 2022. Since the program’s inception, Habitat has served 98 families, mobilized 70 volunteers, and invested $125,000 into crucial repairs that restore and preserve affordable housing.

“I am thrilled to announce the expansion of our home repair services to serve the entire county,” states Meagan Michal, Executive Director. “Our mission has always been to build homes, communities, and hope, and by extending our services, we are furthering that commitment. With a pressing need for affordable housing solutions and countless families struggling to maintain their homes, our expanded reach will make a significant impact. Every individual deserves a safe and stable place to call home, and through these services, we are not just addressing repairs; we are restoring dignity, security, and peace of mind to our neighbors in need. This work prevents displacement and preserves safe, decent and affordable homeownership.”

Habitat for Humanity offers volunteer labor and provides an affordable repair cost to qualified homeowners. The homeowner must be able to pay a percentage of the cost for the work done on the home.  Payments will be based on the applicant’s income and agreed upon at signing of contract.

The program focuses on services such as the following, but are not limited to:

  • Window/door replacement
  • Handicap accessibility ramp
  • Minor exterior repairs to siding & trim
  • Replacement of steps/handrails for safety
  • Energy efficiency projects/insulation

Projects that do not qualify include:

  • Aesthetic (non-critical) home improvements
  • Any project deemed outside scope of work

Habitat’s repair program partners with low-income homeowners based on need and scope of the work. Projects are affordable thanks to volunteers and donors. Additionally, applicants must currently own and occupy the home that needs work. Homes served must be in Horry County and be covered by current homeowner’s insurance. Applicants must provide information of qualifying income to demonstrate need. Income must fall within 35-80% of the area median income for Horry County.  Applicants must also be unable to afford the necessary home repairs and unable to complete them due to age, disability, or circumstance.
