This winter break, a group of passionate Alfred State College students spent their holiday making a difference in the Myrtle Beach community. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Horry County, these students contributed their time and energy to rehabilitate a home for a future homeowner, Toni.
Their work focused on repairing siding and landscaping, which are key steps in preparing the house for its new occupant. The students’ efforts were part of Habitat’s mission to provide safe, affordable housing to families in need across Horry County.
By dedicating their break to this cause, the volunteers exemplified the power of community service and the impact of collaboration. Kayla, one of the Alfred State volunteers, said, “I came for the experience and to see how all of this works. I love seeing the expression on someone’s face when you do something for them—it’s a different feeling.”
The project brought together Alfred State students and local volunteers, showcasing the importance of teamwork in addressing housing challenges. Habitat’s model emphasizes partnerships between volunteers, donors, and future homeowners who contribute “sweat equity” hours to help build or repair their homes. For Toni, this home represents more than shelter—it’s a foundation for stability and hope.
Habitat’s work goes beyond construction; it empowers families by providing them with tools for long-term success as homeowners. As the year ends, Habitat for Humanity of Horry County invites others to join their mission. Whether through volunteering on construction sites, donating to support affordable housing initiatives, or shopping at the Habitat ReStore, there are countless ways to make an impact. Together, we can continue transforming lives and building stronger communities.
