How We Do What We Do…and Why Your SUPPORT Matters

Q&A

Don’t see your question below?
Reach out to our Development Director, Rachel Kennon, at  [email protected] or call her at (843) 999-6471. She would love to chat with you about ways you can support Habitat.

Q: How do you select the families that are served through the Habitat Homeownership program?
A: When selecting families for our program we look at three main criteria
1.) Ability to pay
2.) Willingness to partner
3.) a need for safe, affordable housing.

Q: How and when do people apply for the Habitat Homeownership program?
A: We have two open application periods per year and receive between 75-100 applications during those periods. Currently, we have the ability to accept 8-10 families per cycle.

Q: What does a family have to do once accepted into the Habitat homeownership program and how long does it take?
A: Our families must complete 300 hours of sweat equity, attend monthly financial literacy classes, and save for their home down payment. It takes an average of 18 months from acceptance into the program to home closing.

Q: How much does it cost to build a Habitat home?
A: Here in Horry County, it currently costs $130,000 to build a Habitat home.

Q: Do you give homes away?
A: No. We partner with local families through the Habitat homeownership program, who ultimately purchase their home through a zero-interest, affordable mortgage.

Q: How does the Habitat ReStore support the mission?
A: The ReStore is crucial to our success. Revenue from the store covers 100% of our operating costs and helps build homes. In addition, our ReStore supplies great jobs for the area and keeps tons of waste out of local landfills each year.

Q: I have no construction skills. Can I still volunteer?
A: Yes! Our skilled site leaders can guide you through the process and have you swinging a hammer like a pro in no time! However, we also have volunteer opportunities in our ReStore and in our office if construction is not where your interests are.

Q: Does Habitat rely on monetary donations?
A: Yes! We would not be able to build safe, affordable homes for families in need without the generosity of our donors. 100% of every dollar you give to Habitat for Humanity of Horry County goes into building homes for local families in need.

We are currently 60% under budget for this fiscal year.
Your gift today will help us continue our work!
