Sharon Malone: A Pioneer of Hope and Homes in Horry County

In 1990, a small yet determined group of community members in Horry County came together with a common goal: to provide safe, affordable homes for families in need. Among these pioneers was Sharon Malone, a dedicated volunteer and one of the original board members of what would become Habitat for Humanity of Horry County. Inspired by the global mission of Habitat for Humanity International, founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Sharon and her peers embarked on a journey that would transform countless lives in their community.

The founding members of Habitat for Humanity of Horry County were moved by the stories and successes of Habitat projects they witnessed in Georgia – Habitat for Humanity’s birthplace. During a pivotal trip, they met homeowners and volunteers whose lives had been profoundly impacted by the work of Habitat. This experience ignited a passion within Sharon and her colleagues to bring the same hope and opportunity to their neighbors in Horry County.

With limited resources but boundless determination, Sharon and the initial team began their mission. They reached out to local churches, construction professionals, and community members, slowly building a network of support. Their early efforts were driven by a deep belief that everyone deserved a safe, decent place to call home. Through volunteer labor and community fundraising, they laid the foundation for the first Habitat homes in Horry County.

Sharon fondly recalls the lessons learned during those formative years. She vividly remembers the construction of the first Habitat home and the unexpected challenges they faced. For instance, they installed carpet in the home only to discover that the new homeowner did not own a vacuum. This experience underscored the importance of involving homeowners in building decisions, a practice that became a cornerstone of their work.

As Sharon recounts the names of those who were instrumental in the early years of Habitat Horry County, she highlights the selflessness and dedication of volunteers who gave up weekends, professional services, and financial resources to build homes for those in need. She feels honored to have been part of the founding team and is amazed by the growth of the organization, which has now built 175 homes in Horry County.

Sharon attributes the success of Habitat for Humanity of Horry County to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which she believes inspired people to give generously. Her story is a testament to the power of community, faith, and the unwavering belief that everyone deserves a place to call home.

Today, Habitat for Humanity of Horry County stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders. Sharon Malone and the collective efforts of countless volunteers have created a lasting impact, providing safe and affordable housing for families and fostering a sense of community and belonging. As we reflect on the journey from those early days to the present, we are reminded of the profound difference that a few dedicated individuals can make. Sharon’s story inspires us to continue working towards a world where everyone has a safe, decent place to call home.

Sharon and her husband, Paul, have continued to support Habitat affiliates in other areas as well including Georgetown, SC and Ashville, NC. In addition, The Malone’s set up a scholarship fund at the Waccamaw Community Foundation to help Habitat homeowners and their children attend college.  Their enduring commitment to build a world where everyone has a safe, decent place to call home has left a lasting impact on this community that will not soon be forgotten.
